I came across this article in The New York Times Freakonomics blog. The article starts off by explaining the difference between a geek and a tweaker a la invention vs. innovation. Both of these personalities are necessary and actually thrive off one another. This is demonstrated by using a MatLab programming contest as a case study. it finds that although invention is the initial catalyst, innovation can end up arousing additional rounds of invention. The article concludes by translating everything to copyright, patent, and derivative works.
